Between school, work, vacations, and church service, we've been busy and happy. We've had a good number of opportunities to strengthen friendships and make new ones, and we're grateful for each of those. Our family has been more supportive of us during our tough times than we deserve, and we thank each of you for everything you've done to help bless our family this year.<br /><br />The company Matt worked for ever since he got home from his mission sold his division in February, which meant the first job search for our family. Considering the economy and the fact that so many companies have struggled this year, we tried our best to not be worried about finding new work. We were very blessed to have had a good severance to give us time to look, and fortunate that Matt had made so many good contacts during his work there. After only a few weeks, one of his contacts put him in touch with a company that was looking for someone with his experience, and he was hired on at <a href="http://utahcontrols.com/">Utah Controls</a> in April. Finding something so quickly was a double-blessing, as it allowed us to use his severance to pay for some much-needed home improvements.<br /><br />In March, we installed a basement drain system to keep water out of the house. It was very expensive, but it meant that we didn't have to use the Shop Vac at all this year to get water out of the basement. We had a lot of help from family with this project, and we're very grateful for it. Later in the summer we also installed a fence around the rest of the back yard. And last, but certainly not least, we bought a small camping trailer at the end of the summer. That was probably most exciting for Tricia and the kids, and every time we drive to Grandma and Grandpa Robison's house, Jarom points at the trailer and thinks we're going camping. We took trips this year to Moab, Pineview, and Gooseberry with family.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Oe9wVFhrs0/SyzuG535zyI/AAAAAAAAAfg/wP9rQZ6oXMY/s1600-h/M-Portrait.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 104px; height: 104px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Oe9wVFhrs0/SyzuG535zyI/AAAAAAAAAfg/wP9rQZ6oXMY/s200/M-Portrait.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416966254201786146" border="0" /></a>Matt had a busy year, what with the job change and a new calling in the Church. His job is much the same as what he did with Grandway/Cheetah: materials, logistics, and dabbling in accounting. He's also serving as the Executive Secretary to the Stake Presidency now, which keeps him busy most evenings with meetings, scheduling, making appointments, and coordinating the work of the Stake leadership. He's been playing basketball in the mornings most of the year, and also enjoys photography and fishing. We hope he'll have more time for his hobbies in the coming year.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Oe9wVFhrs0/Syzu9GtUKhI/AAAAAAAAAfo/9XtPirN9EkM/s1600-h/T-Portrait.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 104px; height: 104px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Oe9wVFhrs0/Syzu9GtUKhI/AAAAAAAAAfo/9XtPirN9EkM/s200/T-Portrait.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416967185359972882" border="0" /></a>Tricia also has a new calling this year: Humanitarian Specialist in the Relief Society. That has been a fun challenge for her as she organizes activities that the sisters can do to help those less fortunate. She's worked on school kits and quilts. She's also taken up knitting recently and is enjoying learning the ins and outs of needle-work. She still does a lot of couponing, which is a fun hobby and saves the family a good amount of money. Probably the most exciting thing she's doing right now is being pregnant. We found out in August that we're expecting (the baby is due at the end of April). So with everything she's so busy with, she also gets to deal with having extra migraines and no energy.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Oe9wVFhrs0/SyzwO2JtmfI/AAAAAAAAAfw/Zx7bvh8fAWc/s1600-h/L-Portrait.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 104px; height: 104px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Oe9wVFhrs0/SyzwO2JtmfI/AAAAAAAAAfw/Zx7bvh8fAWc/s200/L-Portrait.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416968589664950770" border="0" /></a>Olivia turned seven earlier this year. She finished up first grade (with Grandma Sheree as her teacher) and started second grade at her new school in August. She loves learning, and is an avid reader. She is also very conscientious and makes a special effort to be friends with other kids who may not otherwise have many. She has been an extra big help around the house, doing extra chores to help Mommy out and helping take care of her brother and sister. She loves her teacher (who is also our neighbor) and really enjoys learning how to write and read. But she especially loves to ride the bus. She is her brother's best friend and does a great deal of keeping him distracted when Mommy is trying really hard to get things done. She and Livi are far and away the most imaginative ones in the family-it's not uncommon to find them playing school or some other pretend game in their room. He loves making messes (the books in the girls' room look much better in a huge pile on the floor than neatly arranged on the shelf) and playing with his cars and dinosaurs. He especially loves going to nursery and has become quite the little copy-cat. He had a difficult adjustment with Anna going to school, since she's always been around for him, but he's doing better now. He likes pretending to play with Wii while the girls really play, and is the main motivation behind putting new locks on the doors (ones that he can't reach).<br /><br />We feel very blessed this year, and are very conscious that our Heavenly Father is aware of our family and our needs, and has blessed us with family and friends to help Him take care of us. string(2437) "We went to the Crump family Christmas party last night, at our cousin Valerie's apartment building right downtown in Salt Lake City. She and her husband have a nice game room that we used, and after dinner everyone bundled up and went to see the lights at Temple Square. Our kids have never been up there, and it was nice for us adults to go back and see everything again. The lights were fun, as usual. The nativity has been updated sometime in the last 15 years (I haven't been for a while...) and we also enjoyed the nativity scenes from around the world in front of the Church Office Building. I probably would have taken a lot more pictures, but I was having trouble even working the camera with my gloves on (and it was way too cold to try it without gloves). string(1086) "Tricia went in for her ultrasound earlier this week. Everything is fine with the baby, it was just very wiggly, which made getting good pictures a little challenging. We saw some really good images, but for whatever reason none of them were printed. This picture here is the best one of the bunch that we got. I hope that changes as he gets older (at least away from the "interpretive" style of dance he does now). We have yet to get video of any of his sweet dance moves, but he sat still this morning long enough to sing for us. Aunt Kati came over after work the other day and gave Anna her first "real" haircut in a while. I say "real" because Anna took some scissors to her own hair a couple of weeks back and "trimmed" a little off the back. Anyway, it's kind of a new look for Anna, and it's kind of fun for a change. Thanks to Kati for doing it, and we'll trade hair cuts for dinners anytime you want. I'm not sure that every family has one, and I feel badly for those who have more than one. It's a little disconcerting when you're trying to decide what to do with your child and "call 911" is one of the options; but that's what we did last night. Liv woke us up around 1:00AM coughing and unable to breathe. After trying to calm her down ourselves, Tricia called emergency dispatch and they sent out the EMTs. And a couple firemen. And a police officer. At 1:15 in the morning. The lovely dispatch girl kept Tricia occupied on the phone while I calmed Liv down enough to get her breathing a little bit.<br /><br />After the EMTs checked her out they thought that it was probably Croup, and said we needed to get her to the hospital for some breathing treatment. They kindly offered to take her for us, but also suggested that we might just want to take her ourselves and save some money. So Liv and I headed off for her third trip to the emergency room. (Luckily for me, it's been long enough since our last visit that I wasn't getting the stink-eye again, and questions about whether or not they needed to call social services. Like last time we were there...)<br /><br />When we got there, we did the old "tell us what's happening" routine and were quickly led into a nice quiet room (ER was empty for a change). After checking her out, the doctor thought it might not be Croup after all, as Livi was missing one of the tell-tale signs: inspiratory stridor (I had to look that up on the interwebz--I thought the doctor was saying she didn't have Strider, whatever that was supposed to mean). That's the loudish wheezing sound kids with Croup usually make while inhaling. Anyway, he thought she might have bronchitis, so they had her do some breathing treatment with Albuterol. When that didn't seem to help much, they gave her a shot of steroids (she was very brave), took a couple x-rays, and finally did a second breathing treatment, this time with racemic epinephrine (commonly used to treat Croup). That did the trick. The nurse warned me that in children, the epinephrine usually causes some hyper-activity, but was surprised when Liv fell right to sleep once her breathing started to come a little easier.<br /><br />The sleep was short-lived though, and Liv was shortly wide awake and ready to go home. The doctors needed to keep us there for a couple of hours to monitor her response to the epinephrine after its effects wore off, so hyper Livi and I tried to keep ourselves occupied for the next three hours. Liv did it by coloring a very nice picture/card for her nurse Julie (I wish I had snapped a picture of that before she gave it away) and reading a Ranger Rick magazine from 1991 (I think the ER could use an updated subscription). Julie made the fatal error of giving Liv the "call" button and telling her to push it if she needed anything. Liv spent the next hour pushing the button every five minutes.<br /><br />Finally, at around 5:00, the epinephrine started to wear off and Liv fell asleep. A few minutes later the doctor came back to check on her and said she would be fine to go home. Her breathing and heart rate were back in good ranges, and she was getting plenty of oxygen. They walked me through the packet of stuff they gave me (prescription, instructions for treating Liv at home, etc...) and we came home, arriving just before 6:00AM. The last thing Liv said to me was to make sure her alarm was set so that she could wake up for school (in twenty minutes). I let Tricia handle the horrible duty of explaining that there would be no school today, which was probably the worst thing to happen all night.<br /><br />PS--I guess I could explain the title of the post. When Livi was doing her breathing treatments (see the picture at the top), we joked around that she looked like a little pink elephant. She would try to make elephant noises and blow the mist at me. It's time-consuming, but can be a big blessing, especially in building up a year's supply of certain items. Well she came across an interesting deal a few weeks ago.<br /><br />SanDisk (creator of memory cards used in gadgets like digital cameras and cell phones) has an interesting rebate program going on where the more memory cards you buy, the more you get back per card in rebate money. For example, if you buy one card, you get $10. If you buy two cards you get back $15 per card. And if you buy three cards, you get back $20 each, or $60 total. Well, normally that wouldn't be very enticing to us, except that during the "cyber Monday" sales of early last week there were some very good deals on memory cards. They usually sell for at least $40 each, but there were a few online retailers selling them for only $20. Well, doing the math, Tricia figured out that if you bought three cards at $20 each, you'd be spending $60 total, and you'd be getting back $60 in rebate money. That's a pretty good deal.<br /><br />So, she bought three memory cards, gave one to me for my camera (it stores around 5 times as many pictures as the card I was using before), and sold the other two on eBay for about $20 each. So, by doing a little research she was able to get net $40 and a new memory card for my camera. And that's what rebate chasing is all about.<br /><br />PS--This promotion is still running, by the way, if you want to try and make it work for yourself. I struggled with shadows, squinting, uneven light on her face, etc... Earlier in the morning, or later in the evening is definitely the way to go. string(3507) "Instead of having the kids all get "school pictures" this year, we thought we'd try a little something new. We have a nice camera, and decent picture software on our computer, so we figured we could take our own pictures and see how we do. If it doesn't work out, we can always go back for boring ol' school pictures again next year.<br /><br />Anna was our first test subject (due in large part to the fact that she's the only one who had a clean outfit this morning). So after Mommy got her all prettied up, Anna and I went out for an hour around the town taking pictures. In keeping with Tricia's other blogging efforts, I'm posting them here, or you can go right to Dave's website and find them <a href="http://www.daveramsey.com/etc/cms/index.cfm?intContentID=4123"><span style="font-style:italic;"><span style="font-weight:bold;">there</span></span></a>, with a wealth of other information, which we do not necessarily endorse. However, these seven steps we agree with mostly, and they are most likely very applicable to those of you who might be reading our blog. Anyway, here they are, with my own thoughts added.<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">$1000 Emergency Fund.</span> Tricia likes to call this the "Baby Emergency Fund" which makes it sound like it's for those surprise pregnancies, but it's not. It's a small emergency fund that needs to be kept away from your other money, usable only for emergencies. Only you can know what constitutes and emergency, but for our family it would most likely be something of a medical or vehicular nature... This is step #1 because if we have this money stashed away, we don't have to go into debt to solve those problems that will surely come.<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Pay Off Debt.</span> Except your house. Use what Dave Ramsey calls the "debt snowball." You're probably familiar with this concept, which entails using all your disposable income to pay off your highest interest debt first. Once that debt is paid off, you roll all the money you were using on it to the next highest interest rate debt. And you continue on until all your debt is paid off, except your mortgage. For most people these debts are likely to be credit cards, automobile loans, student loans, home equity loans, etc...<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Real Emergency Fund.</span> As opposed to the "baby" one in step #1. You build off your $1000 fund and make it bigger. This would be cash reserves equal to 3-6 months of living expenses. The goal here is to use it for the same types of emergencies for which you'd use your "baby emergency fund", but it will cover you in the case of a longer-term financial strain (extended medical care, loss of employment, etc...).<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Retirement.</span> Dave Ramsey suggests 15% of your household income. I suggest that you do some research to determine what your retirement needs will be, and that you customize the amount to match what you expect you'll need. Either way, saving for retirement comes after you've saved up your 3-6 month emergency fund.<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">College Funds.</span> For the kids. I don't suppose this needs much explanation, so we'll just point out that there are more pressing financial needs to be met first.<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Pay Off Mortgage.</span> Early, hopefully. The idea here, as usual, is that you use your disposable income on paying off your mortgage early. Your mortgage is most likely your single largest drain on your personal family finances, and imaging living without it. Wow. A lofty goal to be sure, but one worthy of working on.<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Build Wealth and Give.</span> Invest for growth, give to charities, etc... He's our little trouble-maker; whether it's tearing apart a once-clean kitchen, chewing on his sisters' toys, or teaching himself to navigate the stairs, we've usually got to keep a pretty keen eye on him. But he's also the most likely culprit when we find Livi having fits of the giggles. His birthday finds him making solid attempts at walking (four or five steps is his current record), but only when he's not paying attention. If he really wants to get somewhere, you'll certainly hear the "slap-slap-slap" of his hands and knees as he cruises around. A sure-fire way of getting him on the move is to open the front door. Wherever he is in the house, he knows when he has a chance to get outside, and he's not about to pass up a chance to scrape his knees on the front steps, eat bark chips out of the flower beds, or escape down the sidewalk.<br /><br />We're so happy to have him with us, and can't imagine life without him. Between school, work, vacations, and church service, we've been busy and happy. We've had a good number of opportunities to strengthen friendships and make new ones, and we're grateful for each of those. Our family has been more supportive of us during our tough times than we deserve, and we thank each of you for everything you've done to help bless our family this year.<br /><br />The company Matt worked for ever since he got home from his mission sold his division in February, which meant the first job search for our family. Considering the economy and the fact that so many companies have struggled this year, we tried our best to not be worried about finding new work. We were very blessed to have had a good severance to give us time to look, and fortunate that Matt had made so many good contacts during his work there. After only a few weeks, one of his contacts put him in touch with a company that was looking for someone with his experience, and he was hired on at <a href="http://utahcontrols.com/">Utah Controls</a> in April. Finding something so quickly was a double-blessing, as it allowed us to use his severance to pay for some much-needed home improvements.<br /><br />In March, we installed a basement drain system to keep water out of the house. It was very expensive, but it meant that we didn't have to use the Shop Vac at all this year to get water out of the basement. We had a lot of help from family with this project, and we're very grateful for it. Later in the summer we also installed a fence around the rest of the back yard. And last, but certainly not least, we bought a small camping trailer at the end of the summer. That was probably most exciting for Tricia and the kids, and every time we drive to Grandma and Grandpa Robison's house, Jarom points at the trailer and thinks we're going camping. We took trips this year to Moab, Pineview, and Gooseberry with family.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Oe9wVFhrs0/SyzuG535zyI/AAAAAAAAAfg/wP9rQZ6oXMY/s1600-h/M-Portrait.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 104px; height: 104px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Oe9wVFhrs0/SyzuG535zyI/AAAAAAAAAfg/wP9rQZ6oXMY/s200/M-Portrait.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416966254201786146" border="0" /></a>Matt had a busy year, what with the job change and a new calling in the Church. His job is much the same as what he did with Grandway/Cheetah: materials, logistics, and dabbling in accounting. He's also serving as the Executive Secretary to the Stake Presidency now, which keeps him busy most evenings with meetings, scheduling, making appointments, and coordinating the work of the Stake leadership. He's been playing basketball in the mornings most of the year, and also enjoys photography and fishing. That has been a fun challenge for her as she organizes activities that the sisters can do to help those less fortunate. She's worked on school kits and quilts. She's also taken up knitting recently and is enjoying learning the ins and outs of needle-work. She still does a lot of couponing, which is a fun hobby and saves the family a good amount of money. Probably the most exciting thing she's doing right now is being pregnant. We found out in August that we're expecting (the baby is due at the end of April). So with everything she's so busy with, she also gets to deal with having extra migraines and no energy.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Oe9wVFhrs0/SyzwO2JtmfI/AAAAAAAAAfw/Zx7bvh8fAWc/s1600-h/L-Portrait.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 104px; height: 104px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Oe9wVFhrs0/SyzwO2JtmfI/AAAAAAAAAfw/Zx7bvh8fAWc/s200/L-Portrait.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416968589664950770" border="0" /></a>Olivia turned seven earlier this year. She finished up first grade (with Grandma Sheree as her teacher) and started second grade at her new school in August. She loves learning, and is an avid reader. She is also very conscientious and makes a special effort to be friends with other kids who may not otherwise have many. She has been an extra big help around the house, doing extra chores to help Mommy out and helping take care of her brother and sister. She loves her teacher (who is also our neighbor) and really enjoys learning how to write and read. But she especially loves to ride the bus. She is her brother's best friend and does a great deal of keeping him distracted when Mommy is trying really hard to get things done. She and Livi are far and away the most imaginative ones in the family-it's not uncommon to find them playing school or some other pretend game in their room. He loves making messes (the books in the girls' room look much better in a huge pile on the floor than neatly arranged on the shelf) and playing with his cars and dinosaurs. He especially loves going to nursery and has become quite the little copy-cat. He had a difficult adjustment with Anna going to school, since she's always been around for him, but he's doing better now. He likes pretending to play with Wii while the girls really play, and is the main motivation behind putting new locks on the doors (ones that he can't reach).<br /><br />We feel very blessed this year, and are very conscious that our Heavenly Father is aware of our family and our needs, and has blessed us with family and friends to help Him take care of us. string(2437) "We went to the Crump family Christmas party last night, at our cousin Valerie's apartment building right downtown in Salt Lake City. She and her husband have a nice game room that we used, and after dinner everyone bundled up and went to see the lights at Temple Square. Our kids have never been up there, and it was nice for us adults to go back and see everything again. The lights were fun, as usual. The nativity has been updated sometime in the last 15 years (I haven't been for a while...) and we also enjoyed the nativity scenes from around the world in front of the Church Office Building. I probably would have taken a lot more pictures, but I was having trouble even working the camera with my gloves on (and it was way too cold to try it without gloves). string(1086) "Tricia went in for her ultrasound earlier this week. Everything is fine with the baby, it was just very wiggly, which made getting good pictures a little challenging. We saw some really good images, but for whatever reason none of them were printed. This picture here is the best one of the bunch that we got. Thanks to Kati for doing it, and we'll trade hair cuts for dinners anytime you want. I'm not sure that every family has one, and I feel badly for those who have more than one. It's a little disconcerting when you're trying to decide what to do with your child and "call 911" is one of the options; but that's what we did last night. Liv woke us up around 1:00AM coughing and unable to breathe. After trying to calm her down ourselves, Tricia called emergency dispatch and they sent out the EMTs. And a couple firemen. And a police officer. At 1:15 in the morning. The lovely dispatch girl kept Tricia occupied on the phone while I calmed Liv down enough to get her breathing a little bit.<br /><br />After the EMTs checked her out they thought that it was probably Croup, and said we needed to get her to the hospital for some breathing treatment. They kindly offered to take her for us, but also suggested that we might just want to take her ourselves and save some money. So Liv and I headed off for her third trip to the emergency room. (Luckily for me, it's been long enough since our last visit that I wasn't getting the stink-eye again, and questions about whether or not they needed to call social services. Like last time we were there...)<br /><br />When we got there, we did the old "tell us what's happening" routine and were quickly led into a nice quiet room (ER was empty for a change). After checking her out, the doctor thought it might not be Croup after all, as Livi was missing one of the tell-tale signs: inspiratory stridor (I had to look that up on the interwebz--I thought the doctor was saying she didn't have Strider, whatever that was supposed to mean). That's the loudish wheezing sound kids with Croup usually make while inhaling. Anyway, he thought she might have bronchitis, so they had her do some breathing treatment with Albuterol. When that didn't seem to help much, they gave her a shot of steroids (she was very brave), took a couple x-rays, and finally did a second breathing treatment, this time with racemic epinephrine (commonly used to treat Croup). That did the trick. The nurse warned me that in children, the epinephrine usually causes some hyper-activity, but was surprised when Liv fell right to sleep once her breathing started to come a little easier.<br /><br />The sleep was short-lived though, and Liv was shortly wide awake and ready to go home. The doctors needed to keep us there for a couple of hours to monitor her response to the epinephrine after its effects wore off, so hyper Livi and I tried to keep ourselves occupied for the next three hours. Liv did it by coloring a very nice picture/card for her nurse Julie (I wish I had snapped a picture of that before she gave it away) and reading a Ranger Rick magazine from 1991 (I think the ER could use an updated subscription). Julie made the fatal error of giving Liv the "call" button and telling her to push it if she needed anything. Liv spent the next hour pushing the button every five minutes.<br /><br />Finally, at around 5:00, the epinephrine started to wear off and Liv fell asleep. A few minutes later the doctor came back to check on her and said she would be fine to go home. Her breathing and heart rate were back in good ranges, and she was getting plenty of oxygen. They walked me through the packet of stuff they gave me (prescription, instructions for treating Liv at home, etc...) and we came home, arriving just before 6:00AM. The last thing Liv said to me was to make sure her alarm was set so that she could wake up for school (in twenty minutes). I let Tricia handle the horrible duty of explaining that there would be no school today, which was probably the worst thing to happen all night.<br /><br />PS--I guess I could explain the title of the post. When Livi was doing her breathing treatments (see the picture at the top), we joked around that she looked like a little pink elephant. She would try to make elephant noises and blow the mist at me. It's time-consuming, but can be a big blessing, especially in building up a year's supply of certain items. Well she came across an interesting deal a few weeks ago.<br /><br />SanDisk (creator of memory cards used in gadgets like digital cameras and cell phones) has an interesting rebate program going on where the more memory cards you buy, the more you get back per card in rebate money. For example, if you buy one card, you get $10. If you buy two cards you get back $15 per card. And if you buy three cards, you get back $20 each, or $60 total. Well, normally that wouldn't be very enticing to us, except that during the "cyber Monday" sales of early last week there were some very good deals on memory cards. They usually sell for at least $40 each, but there were a few online retailers selling them for only $20. Well, doing the math, Tricia figured out that if you bought three cards at $20 each, you'd be spending $60 total, and you'd be getting back $60 in rebate money. That's a pretty good deal.<br /><br />So, she bought three memory cards, gave one to me for my camera (it stores around 5 times as many pictures as the card I was using before), and sold the other two on eBay for about $20 each. So, by doing a little research she was able to get net $40 and a new memory card for my camera. And that's what rebate chasing is all about.<br /><br />PS--This promotion is still running, by the way, if you want to try and make it work for yourself. We have a nice camera, and decent picture software on our computer, so we figured we could take our own pictures and see how we do. In keeping with Tricia's other blogging efforts, I'm posting them here, or you can go right to Dave's website and find them <a href="http://www.daveramsey.com/etc/cms/index.cfm?intContentID=4123"><span style="font-style:italic;"><span style="font-weight:bold;">there</span></span></a>, with a wealth of other information, which we do not necessarily endorse. However, these seven steps we agree with mostly, and they are most likely very applicable to those of you who might be reading our blog. Anyway, here they are, with my own thoughts added.<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">$1000 Emergency Fund.</span> Tricia likes to call this the "Baby Emergency Fund" which makes it sound like it's for those surprise pregnancies, but it's not. It's a small emergency fund that needs to be kept away from your other money, usable only for emergencies. Only you can know what constitutes and emergency, but for our family it would most likely be something of a medical or vehicular nature... This is step #1 because if we have this money stashed away, we don't have to go into debt to solve those problems that will surely come.<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Pay Off Debt.</span> Except your house. Use what Dave Ramsey calls the "debt snowball." You're probably familiar with this concept, which entails using all your disposable income to pay off your highest interest debt first. Once that debt is paid off, you roll all the money you were using on it to the next highest interest rate debt. And you continue on until all your debt is paid off, except your mortgage. For most people these debts are likely to be credit cards, automobile loans, student loans, home equity loans, etc...<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Real Emergency Fund.</span> As opposed to the "baby" one in step #1. You build off your $1000 fund and make it bigger. This would be cash reserves equal to 3-6 months of living expenses. The goal here is to use it for the same types of emergencies for which you'd use your "baby emergency fund", but it will cover you in the case of a longer-term financial strain (extended medical care, loss of employment, etc...).<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Retirement.</span> Dave Ramsey suggests 15% of your household income. I suggest that you do some research to determine what your retirement needs will be, and that you customize the amount to match what you expect you'll need. Either way, saving for retirement comes after you've saved up your 3-6 month emergency fund.<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">College Funds.</span> For the kids. I don't suppose this needs much explanation, so we'll just point out that there are more pressing financial needs to be met first.<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Pay Off Mortgage.</span> Early, hopefully. The idea here, as usual, is that you use your disposable income on paying off your mortgage early. Your mortgage is most likely your single largest drain on your personal family finances, and imaging living without it. Wow. A lofty goal to be sure, but one worthy of working on.<br /><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Build Wealth and Give.</span> Invest for growth, give to charities, etc... He's our little trouble-maker; whether it's tearing apart a once-clean kitchen, chewing on his sisters' toys, or teaching himself to navigate the stairs, we've usually got to keep a pretty keen eye on him. But he's also the most likely culprit when we find Livi having fits of the giggles. His birthday finds him making solid attempts at walking (four or five steps is his current record), but only when he's not paying attention. If he really wants to get somewhere, you'll certainly hear the "slap-slap-slap" of his hands and knees as he cruises around. A sure-fire way of getting him on the move is to open the front door. Wherever he is in the house, he knows when he has a chance to get outside, and he's not about to pass up a chance to scrape his knees on the front steps, eat bark chips out of the flower beds, or escape down the sidewalk.<br /><br />We're so happy to have him with us, and can't imagine life without him.
